Thailand's Call for Democracy
2020-2022
Since the events of the 2014 coup d'état carried out by Thailand's military (the 12th in the country's history), and the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016, the country has been in a state of political crisis and effective dictatorship. As the new King Varijalongkorn cements his grip on power via the military's control of parliament, a new generation of Thai's seek the standards of genuine democracy and progress. Their call for democratic reform, starting with the abolishment of law 112 - one of the most strict Lèse-majesté laws in the world - has grown more assertive in the years since 2014, in what has been a re-emergence of a democratic culture and questioning of Thai identity.
